THE HISTORY OF DISTRICT 3170

A Part of Our History of Rotary in INDIA

Prepared by the district and not verified by Rotary Global History

The present RI District 3170 was first carved out as District 317 from the erstwhile District 315 in 1959-60, which was covering entire Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and part of Tamil Nadu.

In 1970-71, three new districts, namely 318, 319 and 313 were reorganized, adding some more areas in the earlier district of 317.
The territory of district 317 at that time included entire North Karnataka, southern parts of Andhra Pradesh and southern parts of Maharashtra.

Again in 1983-84, a new District 316 was formed taking out Gulbarga, Raichur, Bidar, Bellary and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka and Anantpur and Nellore districts of Andhra Pradesh from the then district 317.

Now district 3170 covers Kolhapur, Sangli, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg distrits of Maharashtra State, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Belgaum and Uttar Kannada (North Kanara) districts of Karnataka State and the entire State of Goa.

The first Club in the current set-up is "Dharwad" chartered in 1940.
