The Rotary Club of Enugu was born on 10thMay, 1995 and received its Charter at an exciting and colorful ceremony on Saturday, 24th June, 1995 at the Great Ivory Hall of Dannic Hotel, New Haven, Enugu.

The Charter President, Rtn Emma B.E, Nwankpa and all the officers, directors and the entire members acknowledged with deep gratitude, the creative vision of the then District Governor (RI District 9140) Chief Ben U.C. Aghazu, as well as the resourcefulness of Rtn Arthur Ikeme, President of the Rotary Club of Enugu ( The Sponsor Club).

By their acknowledged act of generosity through the extension work, the birth of the 7th Rotary Club in Enugu, multiplied the efforts of existing Rotarians in and around Enugu Metropolis so that more humanitarian services could be rendered to the people.

The Rotary Club of New Haven acknowledges with thanks the endorsements of the Rotary Clubs of Abakpa Nike, Emene, Trans-Ekulu and Enugu South because they share a common territory with Rotary Club of Enugu (Sponsor Club). Their endorsement to the proposal put forward by the District Governor, Rtn Ben Aghazu for the extensions work through the appointment of Rtn Emma Nwankpa as the District Governor’s Special Representative (DGSR) helped to concretize the dream of a 7th Club in Enugu called the Rotary Club of New Haven.

Rotary Club of New Haven (Rotary Haven) was born to serve: thus, no time was wasted in increasing the volume of service to humanity in the vicinity and in the community throughout the four avenues of service. As a provisional Club, Rotary Club of New Haven made progress fast by assimilating volumes of Rotary information prolifically handed out weekly by the DGSR Emma Nwankpa. Club Meetings emphasized on fellowship as the bedrock of all the avenues of service. All members signed the “Resolution Book” which gave vital life force to the intention of those who viewed the formation of that new Club from a positive angle.

Initially, the Club fellowshipped at the Enugu Rotary Office in order to cut down costs. Later the DGSR was able to obtain special concession and favour from Dannic Hotel, New Haven, Enugu. The concession and the mark of favour enabled the Club to move into the orange Hall of Dannic Hotel at no rental cost. This act of magnanimity made such indelible impressions on the hearts of members that made them resolve to work harder with total commitment for the Charter of the Club.

There were obstacles, however, but they were overcome through the indomitable and undaunted will of the Charter Members. The excitement and enthusiasm that characterized the organization of the new Club gave added impetus to the dedicatwd members such as Rtns Peter Oriavwote, Frank Okereke, Dr Mike Ezenyrioha, HRH Chris Ogakwu, Engr Okey Asiegbu, Sam Nwaekeke, Austin Udeh, Dr Ngozi Ifebunandu, Nze JosphatAjaebili, Dr Paul Okoli Ben Nnabuenyi, Dr Tom Orjiekwe and a host of others who enriched the weekly meetings and who also galvanized support for the Club.

Rtn Ben Aghazu as District Governor gave time, money and material to ensure that the wheel of progress was lubricated. His co-operation with the DGSR produced such unprecedented synergy in the history of the new Club in RI District 9140. The provisional Club which forwarded its preliminary registration papers to RI Zurich Office on 31st January 1995, received its Charter on the 10th of May, 1995. And with a galaxy of charitable activities Rotary Club of New Haven was unanimously elected the BEST CLUB in RI District 9140 on 10th May 1996 at Imo Concord Hotel, Owerri at the District Conference.

Rotary Club of New Haven continued to blaze the trail in humanitarian service, winning ten District Awards. The Club adopted Oji River L.G.A in Enugu State, Nigeria for Polio Eradication Outreach Campaign and immunized more than 1000 babies in November 1995 and March 1996. The Club sponsored two Interact Clubs and two Rotaract Clubs and all the Charter Certificates were presented to the New Clubs in June 1996.
